Planning is a task that involves thinking ahead, considering
options and deciding what to do.
The use of the word "strategic" in the context
of planning means that the planning takes into account:
- What will happen in the longer-term
- The issues of greatest importance to us
Individuals, groups of individuals (e.g. families) and organisations
all engage in strategic planning at some time, even if they
don't know it.
An example of strategic planning for the individual is choosing
one's career.
Sport and recreation organisations need to plan to ensure
their future survival and prosperity. Survival should not
be taken for granted. We live in a fast changing world and
what holds true in one year may be false in the next. Issues
that need to be addressed include:
- The changing demographics of the organisations catchment
area
- The competition between sport and recreation organisations
to increase their membership and participation.
- The improvement of facilities
- The growth and development of a volunteer workforce that
has the capability to deliver programs and services at the
level required
- The influence of media on the demand for particular types
of sport or recreation.
Making decisions about these issues can have a profound effect
upon the future existence of the organisation.
